Numeracy

At Kilmoyle we seek to deliver a broad and balanced numeracy curriculum, including aspects such as number, shape and space, measures, and handling data. We place an emphasis on the promotion of mental strategies which enable pupils to develop their number fluency and on the application of mathematics to everyday life. We help pupils to develop an understanding of mathematical concepts through the use of practical resources such as Cuisenaire Rods and Numicon.

ICT resources which engage pupils in enjoyable and challenging mathematical activities are also utilised and pupils may access the online interactive mathematical learning resource, Mathletics, both at school and from home.

The promotion of problem-solving skills is also at the core of mathematical learning at Kilmoyle PS. All staff make use of the online SPEAR Maths resource and pupils are provided with opportunities to engage in problem solving activities which include, word problems, logic problems, diagrams and visual puzzles, finding all possibilities and exploring rules and patterns. SPEAR is an acronym which supports pupils in tackling problems systematically.
